While often mistaken for a medieval castle because of the stone structure, this ruin on the hills of the Killarney National Park has its history rooted in Ireland's more recent struggle for independence.

What drew me to this scene was not simply its history, but the gentle way nature has begun to reclaim it. Ivy climbs the weathered stone, wildflowers soften the once-hardened walls, and birds have made their home where people once did. Rather than feeling abandoned, the ruins seem alive again—as though the landscape has embraced them, weaving the building back into the world from which it was built.

In painting this piece, I wanted to capture that delicate balance between history and renewal. The enduring stone speaks of the past, while the flourishing greenery reminds us that nature is patient, resilient, and always finds a way to heal what time has left behind.
